Dump frozen crinkle-cut fries in the slow cooker and 3 other ingredients to get a meal so delicious your Memorial Day guests will be begging for more!

These 4-ingredient slow cooker cheesy onion fries are my kind of holiday hack: dump everything in, walk away, and come back to a cozy, melty, ridiculously good side dish that tastes like loaded diner fries. I started making this for Memorial Day when I realized my oven was already packed with burgers, brats, and baked beans.

Slow cooker cheesy onion fries served buffet-style

Using frozen crinkle-cut fries means zero peeling or chopping, and the slow cooker keeps them hot and cheesy for hours—perfect for grazing guests and busy hosts who don’t want to babysit the stove.

Serve these cheesy onion fries straight from the slow cooker on warm, with a big spoon for scooping. They’re awesome piled next to grilled burgers, hot dogs, or BBQ chicken, and they hold up well on a buffet table for parties.

Put out toppings like sour cream, chopped green onions, bacon bits, or hot sauce so people can dress up their own portions. They also make a fun base for a quick meal bowl—top with leftover pulled pork or chili and a simple side salad or watermelon slices to round everything out.

4-Ingredient Slow Cooker Cheesy Onion Fries

Servings: 6-8

Ingredients
1 (28–32 ounce) bag frozen crinkle-cut french fries
1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of onion soup
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
1 (1 ounce) packet dry onion soup mix
Directions
Lightly spray the inside of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray to help with easy cleanup.
Dump the frozen crinkle-cut fries straight into the bottom of the slow cooker and spread them into an even layer so they cook as evenly as possible.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of onion soup and the dry onion soup mix until well combined. The mixture will be thick and very flavorful.
Pour the onion soup mixture evenly over the frozen fries, using a spatula to spread it so most of the fries are lightly coated. It doesn’t have to be perfect—everything will melt together as it cooks.
Onion soup mixture spread over fries
Sprinkle 3/4 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the fries and soup mixture, reserving the remaining 1/4 cup for later.
Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, or on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, until the fries are tender when pierced with a fork and the edges are starting to get a little golden and crispy around the sides.
Cooked cheesy fries bubbling in slow cooker
Once the fries are cooked and the mixture is bubbling around the edges, sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Cover again and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes, just until the cheese on top melts.
Gently scoop from the bottom when serving to get a mix of cheesy fries and oniony sauce in every portion. Switch the slow cooker to WARM for serving and keep the lid partially on to hold heat while guests help themselves.
Variations & Tips

For extra flavor, you can add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or smoked paprika to the onion soup mixture before pouring it over the fries. If you like a little heat, sprinkle in a pinch of red pepper flakes or serve with jalapeño slices on the side.

To make these more like fully loaded fries, top the finished dish with crispy cooked bacon bits, sliced green onions, or diced tomatoes right before serving. You can swap the sharp cheddar for a Mexican blend, Colby Jack, or pepper jack cheese for a different twist.

If you prefer a milder onion flavor, use half the packet of dry onion soup mix and taste before adding more next time. For easier cleanup, line the slow cooker with a slow cooker liner, but still keep an eye on the edges so nothing overbrowns.

Food safety tips: Always keep the fries frozen until you’re ready to add them to the slow cooker, and don’t let the finished dish sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours—after serving, either keep it on WARM in the slow cooker or refrigerate leftovers in a shallow container within that time frame. Reheat leftovers thoroughly until steaming hot in the microwave or oven before eating, and discard any leftovers that have been left out too long on a buffe

At Our Fifth-Anniversary Party, My Wife Pointed to Her Ex and Laughed, “If My Husband Ever Fails Me, He’ll Take His Place”—So I Removed My Wedding Ring, Dropped It Into His Hand, and Ended Their Little Game in Front of Everyone

backyard, pointed toward her former boyfriend, and laughed as her best friend called him her “backup husband.”

Thirty people heard it.

Thirty people saw her smile.

And every one of them became silent when I removed my wedding ring, walked toward the man who was supposed to replace me, and dropped it into his hand.

“Your turn, buddy,” I said. “She’s yours now.”

I never imagined I would become the kind of man who walked out of his own anniversary celebration. Then again, I never imagined my wife would publicly announce that she had kept another man waiting in case I became inconvenient.

Three weeks earlier, Allison had suggested throwing a party for our fifth anniversary.

I was not enthusiastic. We had been married for five years, but lately, very little about our relationship felt worth celebrating. Our conversations had become practical exchanges about bills, schedules, groceries, and household repairs. We still occupied the same rooms, slept in the same bed, and signed the same holiday cards, but the warmth between us had quietly disappeared.

Allison insisted that the party would be good for us.

“We haven’t seen everyone in months,” she said one evening while standing at the kitchen island. “It’ll be fun. We need something fun.”

I wanted to ask why reconnecting with other people would help us reconnect with each other. Instead, I nodded.

“All right.”

Her face brightened immediately.

“I’ll handle the invitations.”

That should have been my first warning.

The party took place on a warm Saturday evening at the suburban rental house we had shared since our second year of marriage. The backyard was not large, but Allison had transformed it with strands of Edison bulbs, white tablecloths, flower arrangements, and framed photographs from our wedding.

A silver number five stood on top of the cake.

The grill smoked near the fence. Cold drinks filled two coolers beside the deck. Music played through outdoor speakers while neighbors, coworkers, college friends, and relatives moved between the patio and the kitchen.

There were around thirty guests.

I was tending the grill when I saw him.

Breeze Walker stood beside the patio doors with one hand in his pocket and the other holding a drink. He wore a gray button-down shirt with the sleeves folded carefully to his elbows. He had the relaxed confidence of a man who believed he had every right to be there.

Breeze had dated Allison for two years in college.

Their relationship had ended several months before she met me. According to Allison, the breakup had been difficult but final. They remained connected on social media, exchanged birthday messages, and occasionally liked each other’s photographs. I had never considered that unusual.

I trusted my wife.

What I did not know was that Breeze had been invited to our anniversary party.

I handed the grill tongs to one of my coworkers and walked toward Allison. She was arranging plates beside the kitchen door.

“What is he doing here?” I asked quietly.

She glanced over my shoulder.

“Who?”

“Breeze.”

“Oh.” She shrugged. “One of the girls must have brought him.”

“Which girl?”

“I don’t know. Melissa, maybe.”

She spoke as though an old boyfriend appearing at our wedding-anniversary celebration were no more significant than someone bringing an extra bag of ice.

“You didn’t know he was coming?”

“No.”

Her answer arrived quickly.

I looked at her for another second, but she had already turned toward the cake table.

“Can you check the burgers?” she asked. “People are getting hungry.”

I returned to the grill.

For the first hour, nothing happened. People ate, drank, talked about work, compared vacation plans, and admired the photographs Allison had arranged around the patio.

Breeze stayed mostly with her college friends. He and Allison spoke occasionally, but never long enough to seem suspicious. I began to think I had allowed his presence to bother me unnecessarily.

Then Melissa became louder.

She had been drinking since early in the evening. By eight thirty, every comment became a performance designed for the entire patio to hear.

I was fifteen feet away near the cooler when she raised her glass toward Allison.

“Girl, you planned this perfectly.”

Several people turned.

Allison laughed.

“What are you talking about?”

Melissa pointed toward Breeze, who was standing beside them.

“Your backup husband is already here. If your real husband ever messes up, you’re covered.”

The women around her laughed.

Breeze smiled.

Allison laughed too.

It was not an uncomfortable laugh. She did not correct Melissa or move away from Breeze. She looked directly at him with visible amusement, and he returned the look with a smug confidence that made the entire scene feel rehearsed.
