The Woman Beneath the Hawthorne Mansion

A bracelet I had seen before.
In the photograph inside the kitchen drawer.
The same bracelet worn by:
Lucía Hawthorne.
The woman everyone believed had died six months earlier.
The woman who called me.
The woman who begged me not to let Elliot hear her.
She was alive.
But as she pulled herself into the hallway, I noticed something else.
She wasn’t looking at Elliot.
She was looking at the girls.
With tears streaming down her face.
“My babies…”
The six girls broke.
They ran.
Straight into her arms.
And Elliot didn’t stop them.
He couldn’t.
Because everyone finally saw the truth.
Lucía wasn’t the person trapped in that basement.
She was the person who had escaped.
She held her daughters tightly while crying.
But then she looked at me.
And her expression changed.
Fear returned.
“Where is the nanny who came before you?”
I froze.
“What?”
Lucía looked at Elliot.
Then back at me.
“How many nannies did he tell you left because they couldn’t handle the job?”
I swallowed.
“Thirty-eight.”
Her face went pale.
“Thirty-eight?”
I nodded.
Lucía grabbed my arm.
“Listen to me carefully.”
Her voice trembled.
“They didn’t quit.”
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“What happened to them?”
She looked toward the locked basement.
Then whispered:
“They found out the truth.”
Behind us, Elliot finally spoke.
His voice was no longer calm.
“You should have stayed away, Lucía.”
The mansion fell silent.
Lucía turned toward him.
And for the first time, I saw anger instead of fear.
“You told everyone I was dead.”
Elliot said nothing.
“You locked me away.”
The girls started crying harder.
“And you convinced our daughters that their own mother was a ghost.”
I stared at Elliot.
The man who hired me.
The man who warned me not to interfere.
The man who told everyone his wife was gone.
But before anyone could move…
sirens sounded outside.
Multiple vehicles.
Police.
Elliot’s face changed.
He looked toward the front doors.
Then at me.
“You called them?”
I shook my head.
“I didn’t.”
Lucía looked down at her phone.
Her eyes widened.
“I did.”
Elliot stared at her.
“How?”
Lucía held up the old cellphone.
The one she had used to call me.
“I wasn’t calling my daughters.”
She looked directly at him.
“I was calling for help.”
Then she said the words that made every piece fall into place.
“The thirty-ninth nanny wasn’t supposed to survive.”
I felt a chill.
“What do you mean?”
Lucía looked at me.
“Because the thirty-eight before you weren’t fired.”
She glanced toward the basement.
“They were witnesses.”
The police stormed into the mansion seconds later.
And as Elliot Hawthorne was taken away, I finally understood why every nanny had disappeared.
They weren’t afraid of the mansion.
They were afraid of what they discovered inside it.
But the biggest secret was still hidden.
Because when investigators opened the basement completely…
they found something Elliot had spent years hiding.
Something that proved Lucía wasn’t his first victim.
And the names written inside that basement changed everything.
