I took my newborn twins to the women’s restroom to change them – This privileged woman initially called the authorities, before quickly retracting her statement.

« One phone call, and you’ll never find anywhere to live here again. »
I felt nauseous.
« That’s illegal. »
She smiled.
« People like you always think the rules don’t apply to them. »
I looked at my daughters.
Then we go inside.
« You can threaten me all you want. But you will not make me ashamed to take care of my children. »
A voice rose from the crowd.
« Mom, stop that. »
A pregnant woman stood there, her husband by her side.
Patricia’s face changed.
« Paige, don’t interfere. »
Paige looked at me, then looked at the twins.
« I heard everything. »
She turned towards her mother.
« You knew he was a father trying to help his children, and yet you still treated him like a problem. »
Patricia crossed her arms.
« When you have a child, you’ll understand. Babies need their mothers. »
Paige shook her head.
« No. When I have a child, I’ll understand that babies need their parents. »
The man next to her nodded.
« Our child will need both of us. »
Silence reigned in the corridor.
Paige looked at her mother.
« If something were to happen to me, I would like to believe that my husband would also fight for our child. »
Patricia had nothing to say.
Later, I bought some yellow leggings.
Once I got home, I placed them next to the girls’ beds.
I touched the wedding ring.
« We did it today, Claire, » I whispered.
The girls were sleeping peacefully.
For the first time in weeks, I thought that maybe I could do it.
Not perfectly.
Not without fear.
But with love.
And that was enough.
