Three weeks after my wife’s death, I took our newborn twins to the mall to buy the yellow onesies she had so desperately wanted.

It was the first time I had gone out alone with them.

Sitting in the car in the parking lot, hands on the steering wheel, I watched Ivy and Lily sleeping in their stroller. The entrance to the mall was full of families with shopping bags, laughing children, and couples strolling by.

Everyone seemed to be at home.

And I felt like I was pretending.

Before leaving, I listened to the last voicemail Claire had sent me.

« Don’t forget the zip-up onesies. »

Her voice filled the car – warm and familiar.

I smiled despite myself.

« What’s wrong with people having pimples? » echoed my old voice in the recording.

Her quiet laughter came from the recording.

« No pimples at three in the morning, Mason. Trust me. You’ll cry before the babies. »

I pressed my fingers against my wedding ring.

Claire has always known me better than anyone else.

« And make sure they’re yellow, » she added. « Everyone’s buying pink. They’re babies, not cupcakes. »

A laugh escaped, but it quickly turned into pain.

She left three weeks ago.

Three weeks have passed since the day I held her hand in the hospital room.

Three weeks have passed since doctors announced she would not be going home.

People kept telling me I was strong.

They did not see the nights when I lay staring at the ceiling, afraid that I would not be able to complete what I was doing.

I wasn’t strong.

I was just a dad with two little girls who depended on me.

So I got out of the car.

« Okay, girls, » I said softly, lifting the stroller handle. « We’re doing this for Mommy. »

The baby store was bright and cheerful – almost too much so.

I quickly found the yellow vines.

I picked them up and smiled.

« Your mother was right, » I told the girls. « Pimples are a very bad idea. »

I put two lots in the basket.

Then Ivy started to cry.

A second later, Lily joined them.

I sighed.

« I know, I know. Dad’s coming. »

I checked Ivy first.

Her diapers were leaking and her clothes were soaked.

« Oh, darling, » I whispered. « This is a complete disaster. »

I grabbed my diaper bag and rushed into the bathroom.

The men’s toilets were almost empty.

I looked around me.

There was no development chart.

The man who was washing his hands noticed my face.

« Are you looking for a table? »

I nodded.

« It has been removed, » he said. « Technical problem. »

I had a knot in my stomach.

« Do you know where the family toilets are? »

« On the other side of the mall. In the east wing. »

“To what extent?”

« Fifteen minutes, maybe. »

I looked at my crying daughters.

Fifteen minutes was too long.

I found a security guard nearby.

« Excuse me. Is there another place to change diapers? »

He looked at the cart and understood immediately.

« The family bathroom is closed. The nearest one is in the east wing. »

What happened next?

« Is there anyone else? »

He shook his head.

I stood there, not knowing what to do.

A woman who was passing by then noticed me looking at the women’s toilets.

« You can’t go. »

« I know, » I said. « But my daughters are newborns. There’s no table in the men’s restroom, and the family room is closed. »

« That’s not my problem. »

And she left.

I stayed there, holding the diaper bag, listening to my daughters crying.

And I heard Claire’s voice in my head.

« Talk to them, Mason. Even if you feel stupid. They recognize your voice. »

I leaned against the cart.

“My daughters, Daddy will take care of you. We’ll take care of it.”

I hated the choice I had to make.

But I loved my daughters more than I feared the opinions of others.

I approached the door to the women’s restroom.

I stopped before going in.

« Excuse me, » I said aloud. « I have newborn twins. There’s no changing table in the men’s r
