Joe dropped a peeled potato into the bucket of cold water with a heavy splash. He wiped his hands on his white apron, leaving a wet gray streak across the cloth.

“She is never late,” Joe said. His voice sounded like gravel shifting under a boot.

I kept my eyes on the metal scraper, pushing it hard against the dark steel of the grill. I rubbed my left wrist with my thumb, feeling the small scar from my childhood.

“Maybe she slept in,” I said.

Joe grunted and picked up another potato. He sliced a dark eye out of the skin with one quick motion of his thumb.

“At eighty-five, you do not sleep in,” Joe said. He wiped his hands on his apron again. “Go check on her after the breakfast rush.”

I did not answer him because the bell above the front door chimed. Two truck drivers from the concrete plant walked in, their work boots leaving wet gray prints on the linoleum. They took their hats off and sat at the counter, pulling their wallets out to find single dollars for the coffee.

“James, get the grease off that flat-top before you drop the bacon,” Joe muttered, his voice raspy and low.

I scraped the metal corner of the blade against the back lip of the grill, listening to the high-pitched screech. My mind was not on the bacon; it was on the small yellow house two blocks down Willow Street where Mrs. Rhode lived alone.

“Evelyn was in here yesterday,” Joe said, throwing a potato skin into the trash. “Asking about her aunt’s banking. She wanted to know if I still cash Clara’s pension checks.”

“Do you?” I asked.

“I told her it was none of her business,” Joe said. “Evelyn had that gold watch of hers ticking right in my face the whole time. She is always in a hurry to get somewhere she does not belong.”

I kept scrubbing. Joe was fifty-eight, and his diner was his whole life, but lately, he spent more time looking at the unpaid bills on his desk than at the grill. A cup of coffee still cost a dollar, and a gallon of gas was up to three dollars, but the customers were spending less every week.

“She is probably just tired,” I said, thinking of Mrs. Rhode. “The wind was loud last night.”

By two in the afternoon, the rain had settled into the bare maple trees along the road. I carried the small wooden tray with the porcelain teapot and the white mug across Mrs. Rhode’s living room. The room smelled like peppermint tea and old newspapers.

She sat in her high-backed chair by the stone fireplace. A small fire crackled behind the metal screen, but the room still felt drafty.

I set the tray on the low oak table beside her. She did not look at the tea.

“You are six hours late, James,” she said.

She tapped her wooden cane twice against the floorboards. The sharp sound made me step back.

“The diner was busy,” I said. “Joe needed me on the grill.”

“Joe is fifty-eight years old and can flip his own eggs,” she said. She reached for the mug with a thin, trembling hand.

I looked past her toward the fireplace mantel. Sitting between two small brass candlesticks was an old, dented metal lunchbox, its green paint chipped away at the corners to reveal gray metal underneath.

I had never seen it there before. I reached out toward the wire handle of the box.

“Leave that alone,” she said.

She did not use her dry wit when she said it. Her voice was flat and cold, like a latch clicking into place.

I pulled my hand back and rubbed my left wrist. “I was just going to dust under it, Mrs. Rhode.”
